United States Laptops have taken the lead over desktop PCs for the first time in Q3 2008. This development signifies the rising penetration of laptops into the lower market, according to iSuppli Corp. In Q3 2008, laptop shipments totaled 38.6 million units, a 40 percent increase over the same period last year. Desktop PC shipments, on the other hand, dropped by 1.3 percent y-o-y to 38.5 million units. The advancement of laptops is attributed to the segment’s growing availability to most people for personal use–expanding beyond the initial business or higher-class market targets of laptops.
