Germany Qimonda AG, a leading supplier of memory products, has released the industry’s first 512Mb Graphics Double Data Rate 5 (GDDR5) samples to customers. GDDR5 will be available with data rates up to 20GBps per component—more than double the bandwidth of the fastest GDDR3 memory modules available in the market today. The memory module is targeted at a variety of applications, such as high-performance desktop graphic cards, laptop graphics, game consoles and other graphics intensive applications. Products with GDDR5 memories are expected for release in 2008.
GDDR5 standard, which is seen as the next predominant graphics DRAM standard, is nearing finalization at the Joint Electron Device Engineering Council (JEDEC).
